Netherlands’ Sharon van Rouwendaal won Olympic gold in the women’s 10,000m open water swim, with Briton Keri-Anne Payne missing out on a medal. France’s Aurelie Muller had won silver but was disqualified at the finish line on Rio’s Copacabana Beach. South Africa’s Chad Ho notched up his second Top 10 finish at an Olympic open water swimming event as he came in just five seconds behind the winner at Fort Copacabana on Tuesday. OPEN WATER: Jack Burnell calls refereeing ‘a joke’ after Rio marathon swim disqualification

Team GB marathon swimmer Jack Burnell branded the refereeing of the men’s 10km open water swim at the Rio Olympics “an absolute joke” after being disqualified from the event. A chaotic finish saw Greece’s Spiros Gianniotis initially claim victory, but his medal was later downgraded to silver meaning Dutchman Ferry Weertman took the gold.
