PARALYMPICS: Kevin Paul wins Gold in SB9 100m Breaststroke

Team South Africa’s Paralympic medal chase is off to a golden start after swimmer Kevin Paul powered his way to breaststroke gold in Rio de Janeiro on Thursday night. Paul, 25, won the SB9 100-metre event in 1min 04.86sec to win his second Paralympic gold medal after doing the same in Beijing eight years ago. Netherlands’ Sharon van Rouwendaal won Olympic gold in the women’s 10,000m open water swim, with Briton Keri-Anne Payne missing out on a medal. France’s Aurelie Muller had won silver but was disqualified at the finish line on Rio’s Copacabana Beach. A replay showed the world champion forcibly holding Italy’s Rachele Bruni down with her right arm while trying to touch the finishing board.
